Valley Airfield was built at the start of the Second World War, and used as a staging post for United States Air Force planes to refuel.
USAF airmen were billeted at Ravenspoint in this period, and Rima Glazebrook can remember visiting the house as a girl when carol singing at Christmas, presumably hoping for imported treats.
She recalls that "Mrs Rome cooked for them and was amazed at the quality and quantity of food that they brought with them, especially compared with the meagre rations the locals had to exist on."
